Scars

I have always been fascinated by scars—they’re pretty gnarly. As a kid the fascination came from the textures and colors created. That same fascination carried onto the beginning of this project when I was using a view camera to get strange images of scars. From there, I wanted to know the stories behind all the lines I was photographing. This single line on the body is a history written in its own language. Looking closer, I saw that there are a myriad of lines created on the body throughout life, and each one of those lines holds an untold story that is waiting to be discovered. There are many different connotations that can be connected to scars. There are the physical scars and the emotional ones, and there is a link between the two. The scars that are linked are the harder ones to talk about– the ones that when some asks the story behind it, there is an awkward silence and a made up story of how the scar came to be. This work explores that notion and then allows the scars/stories to escape from their binds of being scarred or hidden.
